The Public
Innovation Institute

From public health and climate resilience to education, civic infrastructure, and responsible AI, our work empowers cities, communities, and individuals to imagine—and build—a more just and equitable future.

Across six interconnected frontiers, we explore how bold ideas, human ingenuity, and emerging technologies can shape a more just, livable, and imaginative future.

Public  & Global Health

We aren't interested in waiting for the next crisis—we are working to prevent it. PII champions bold innovations that anticipate and mitigate health threats before they take root. From building data systems that detect early warning signs to designing technologies that address the social drivers of illness, our work is focused upstream—where real and lasting change begins.

Education & Workforce Innovation

We’re preparing students for the future by equipping them to shape it. Our education programs focus on building the skills that matter most: data fluency, analytical thinking, AI literacy, and public leadership. We believe that the ability to work across disciplines, understand systems, and use technology for public good is essential for solving the complex challenges of our time—from climate to health to economic justice. Our mission: cultivate a new generation of civic innovators ready to lead with purpose, evidence, and imagination.

Climate & Environment

The climate crisis is not just an environmental issue—it’s a public health emergency, an economic disruptor, and a justice imperative. We are advancing bold, interdisciplinary strategies to mitigate climate risks, promote environmental justice, and design sustainable systems. From data-driven tools to community-centered adaptation, we’re focused on preventing harm before it happens and building resilient futures—especially for those most affected by climate change.

Artificial Intelligence &
Data Governance

AI is reshaping the world—but without public vision and ethical guardrails, it risks deepening the very inequities it promises to solve. We are working at the intersection of innovation, governance, and justice to ensure data and AI serve the public interest. From municipal AI frameworks to global health surveillance, we support communities, governments, and institutions in developing responsible, transparent, and equitable data systems. Because in the era of AI, governance isn’t optional, it’s foundational.

Civic &
Digital Infrastructure

Infrastructure is more than roads and broadband—it’s the invisible scaffolding of democracy, equity, and opportunity. We are working to modernize civic and digital systems so they serve people more effectively and justly. From open data platforms to equitable transit networks, we help cities and governments design the foundations of the future—ones that are inclusive, transparent, and built for public resilience. When infrastructure works for everyone, everything else becomes possible.

Economic Transformation

In too many places, the circumstances of birth still define the boundaries of opportunity. Children born into poverty are far more likely to remain at the bottom of the economic ladder, not because of a lack of talent, but because of structural barriers baked into housing, education, health, and even digital access. At the Public Innovation Institute, we work to dismantle these barriers and build pathways to upward mobility—especially for those historically locked out of prosperity. Our approach is systemic: we understand that economic outcomes are shaped by climate policy, data governance, infrastructure investment, and beyond. Real transformation begins when every sector is held accountable for the future it creates.
